Hvar – The Fortica Fortress introduced entrance fees

Since summer 2020, visitors arriving on Hvar island have to pay an entrance ticket in order to visit Fortica Fortress in Hvar Town. The new ticket price for visitors is 40 HRK including VAT.

Admission is free for children up to 7 years of age and young people from 7 to 16 years of age are charged 50% of the price, i.e. 20 HRK.

For agency groups of more than 10 people who are charged via voucher, a 10% discount is granted on the ticket price of 40 HRK, and group entry is free for group guides.

The Fortica will be open to visitors from 9 am to 9 pm.

The Fort Fortica, also known as the Spanish Fortress, is one of the biggest attractions on Hvar island. It is located on the hill just above Hvar town offering magnificent views over the bay and Pakleni islands. The site has a long history dating to around 500 BC. Illyrians were the first ones who settled the island and build a defensive citadel. During the Roman period, there was a Byzantine fort dating back to the 6th century. Furthermore, the 13th century brings Venetians who gradually developed a fortress. During the invasion of the Turks in the 16th century, the fortress was extremely damaged and later rebuilt. The fortress was named Spanish Fortress after the Spanish engineers who worked on it during the 14th century.

Getting to the fortress can be done on foot or by taxi.
