A striking tourist weekend on Croatian coast and islands
August has always been the striking month for Croatian tourism and this year’s figures confirm that, despite the situation with the coronavirus. Ferries and catamarans all over the Adriatic are full on all departures, especially in Split-Dalmatia County.
Full ferries on Makarska – Sumartin ferry line
A few days ago, the ferry “Pelješčanka” on the line Makarska – Sumartin was full on all voyages with only a few free places for vehicles for the voyages the day after. At the same time, ferries from Sumartin to Makarska were full as well and the first tickets were available only on Monday morning, as stated in Jadrolinija.
On the line Drvenik – Sučuraj two ferries are sailing, the waiting time for boarding in Drvenik is up to an hour, and waiting time in the port of Sučuraj to return from the island of Hvar is about three hours.
All buses on arrivals and departures from Makarska are full, while on arrivals from the direction of Split, buses are delayed by up to 40 minutes. The delays are present on other bus lines as well.
Hvar is experiencing a real tourist renaissance
Jelsa marks the 110th anniversary of organized tourism. This summer, Hvar is experiencing a real tourist renaissance and there is not a single free bed on the world’s leading accommodation search engines until September.
Boarding the ferry to Hvar, including Jelsa, is a real lottery. And the crowds are endless. Day and night. The island is achieving results almost as in 2019. The caterers are, of course, satisfied, in Zavala and Jelsa the prices are not as high as in the fashionable Hvar, but they earn well.
Caterer Antonio Šimić says the season is excellent here and it would be good if it would continue like this as long as possible. No one mentions that August could drag us into the red again like last year.
The director of the Jelsa Tourist Board Marija Marjan points out that the announcements until the end of August and the first half of September are really good that we can expect an extension of the season and really good results until the middle of September.
Tourism in Jelsa is being pushed by excellent camps and family accommodation while unrenovated hotels have remained in the 1980s, not contributing to the destination which is celebrating its 110th anniversary of tourism.
The big anniversary of 110 years of organized tourism was celebrated with the Day of the Municipality. The municipality celebrates its day on the feast of the Assumption, 110 years of tourism are counted from the moment when the first hotel in Jelsa was opened, the old hotel Jadran which is waiting to be renovated.
