Brač, Hvar, Korčula and the Cres-Lošinj archipelago on the path to clean energy
Activities from the first phase of the Secretariat for Islands continue, in which among the 26 European islands, the Croatian islands of Brač, Hvar and Korčula and the Cres-Lošinj archipelago have drawn up energy transition plans, based on which they will be able to apply for European funds.
At the same time, it is an opportunity for other Croatian islands that want to start their journey towards clean energy because, despite the abundance of renewable energy sources, many depend on fossil fuels and energy imports from the mainland. The transition to clean energy sources can help islands not only become more self-sufficient and prosperous but also open up new employment opportunities.
Professional Support
As Maja Jurišić from Pokret Otoka says, for the next two years, the regional partner will cooperate with the Secretariat for Islands on further strengthening and expanding the network of islands that are ready to embark on an energy transition modelled on Brač, Hvar Island, Korčula Island and the Cres-Lošinj archipelago. But this also refers to other islands such as Zlarin and Silba which continuously develop their capacities in the field of sustainable development and actively involve the local community in the transition process.
For islands that are ready to start strategic planning, the Secretariat will provide support in finding funding sources and shaping future projects, while for islands that are just beginning the community engagement process, the Secretariat has prepared expert support for community building and defining transition strategies.
Cres-Lošinj archipelago
The Cres-Lošinj archipelago is one of the “pilot” islands that were the first to make their energy transition plans, including seven islands of Cres, Lošinj, Unije, Ilovik, Susak, Vela Srakana and Mala Srakana. In cooperation with the Secretariat for Clean Energy of the EU Islands, OTRA – Island Development Agency in 2019 coordinated the development of the Program of energy transition of the Cres-Lošinj archipelago to clean energy.
