Jadrolinija is building three new electric ships
Croatia’s oldest shipping transport company has started the public procurement procedure for the construction of three electrically powered passenger ships. The estimated value of the ships is 45 million euros, and the construction should be co-financed from European funds.
We are talking about three passenger ships that do not emit harmful gases. They will be electrically powered and intended for the transport of passengers and cargo. Each ship will have a capacity of 389 passengers, with eight crew members.
These three ships should replace the “old-timers” of Jadrolinija, the ships Tijat, Postira and Premuda, built more than sixty years ago.
In addition to general navigation, the ship should also be designed for the needs of navigation on state shipping lines:
The maximum length of the ship can be 52 meters, and the maximum width can be 12 meters.
The basic propulsion of ships is electric
The basic drive of the ship should be electric with the use of electricity stored in batteries. The durability of the battery should be at least eight years, with assumed operation on the national shipping line Suđurađ – Dubrovnik.
An additional source of electricity will be a photovoltaic power plant installed on the roof of the 90 square meter sun deck.
For the safety of the ship and its passengers, backup energy sources will be installed on the ship as well. Two diesel generators with exhaust gas emissions in accordance with the IMO Tier III standard will also be installed.
The ship must be designed, built and equipped in accordance with the provisions of the Maritime Code, the Rules for statutory certification of passenger ships in national navigation and other regulations.
The deadline for the submission of offers is February 22, 2023.
Will domestic shipyards build these ships?
There is interest from domestic shipyards in the construction of these ships, but the builder will be selected through a public procurement procedure, in accordance with the evaluation of the offers that arrive at the tender.
We would be happy if these ships were built by domestic shipyards, but we cannot predict anything in this matter, until the public procurement procedure is completed and the best offers are selected.

This year, Jadrolinija intends to start the construction of a new ferry for the Zadar water area.
This project is also intended to use green technologies – hybrid technology of diesel and electric drive.
In the published documentation, it is stated that Jadrolinija is conducting a competitive procedure with negotiations in two stages. The goal is to conclude a framework agreement with one bidder, and on the basis of that agreement, a public procurement contract can be awarded.
