JELSA – This year the Wine Festival will last seven days
The longest-running festival on the Adriatic is celebrating 70 years this year, on the occasion of that anniversary, the program will last 7 days from 22.08. – 28.08.2022.
In recent years, the wine festival has returned to its original purpose – to be a joyful manifestation of the promotion of domestic Hvar island wines, primarily the best ones produced in the area of the Jelšan ring. In this wine-growing region, we find several different theories and various types of red and white wines, and prosecco.
The last weekend of August is full of events
For the last thirty years, these wines have stood out for their quality, winning awards at competitions and delighting guests, for whom the Wine Festival is an opportunity to taste and feel the differences between wines from the southern slopes of the island, locations from the Jelšan slopes and valleys, and fields by the sea.
Surprised by their excellence, many will take with them the story not only of the sunny island and the beautiful blue sea but also of the sun captured in the golden color of white wine and the ruby glow of red wine. The “wine” part culminates with the announcement of the best wines of that year.
This festival always provides a lot of colorful entertainment. Various sports and entertainment competitions are held. Water polo matches are played in the harbor, rowing competitions are held, international regattas are held, prosciutto is removed from the top of a ten-meter-high mast…
Everything is, of course, spiced up with a gastronomic offer and accompanied by concerts of the Jelsa Cultural and Artistic Society, local and visiting klapas, performances by renowned musicians and magnificent fireworks.
On the last week in August, more precisely from Monday to Sunday, we guarantee you a lot of fun and a good seven-day time!
History of the Wine Festival
The first wine festival was held in 1952 on the initiative of the community – the Jelsa Cooperative Union under the name Kotarski zadružni slet, in 1954 the Cooperative Day was held, and since 1956 it has mostly been called the Wine Fair or Zadružni slet. In 1966, the Wine Fair was held on August 14, and that day was declared the Day of Tourism in Jelsa.
For years, the festival was held in the first half of August, from Friday to Sunday.
The rush would start from the morning hours and last until the dawn of the next day. Huge quantities of wine were poured because the idea was that by selling the old wine, the taverns would be freed up for the new wine that will come with the upcoming harvest.
