Korcula Town gets free Wi-Fi service
Citizens and visitors of Korcula Town now can access free Wi-Fi service in all public areas inside the town, courtesy of Hrvatski Telekom. Korcula is one of several towns which got a 15.000 € voucher for free Wi-Fi, as part of the WiFi4EU initiative. Hrvatski Telekom was chosen as a provider that will set up the service, and therefore make the life of locals somewhat modern and more easier.
The challenge of the project was to incorporate the infrastructure and access points within Old Town, as well as to optimize the network for better coverage, in both small alleys and town beaches. With this project, Korcula confirms its status as a leader in digitalization of Croatian islands, as seen by earlier projects like smart waste collection and modern parking solutions. With these improvements, Korcula island sets an example as an island with a vision and a constant strategy of modernization.
WiFi4EU is an initiative by European Commision, aimed to provide high-quality WiFi access to citizens in places like parks, squares, public buildings, libraries and museums. Therefore, 10 access points were installed in Korcula Town. All of them are successfully connected and integrated with the city’s communication network. They cover locations on the eastern parts of town, as well as most frequently visited places. Project is significant for both local people and tourists, giving them easy access to the Internet.
As for Hrvatski Telekom, its representatives stated they’re happy to be recognized as a reliable partner. They hope to continue with digitalization of Croatia by providing Internet access to as many people as possible, and building new infrastructure, WiFi access points and mobile networks.
