Krk Island – New ICT infrastructure on the island
The Krk Town administration recently signed a contract, which will give Krk island a significant amount of money meant for building telecommunication infrastructure. Project is officially named “Building the next generation broadband network on Krk Island“. Krk town is again one of the project leaders, as was the case with other island projects, such as building the water and sewage systems. Island habitants agreed and let the city administration lead the entire process. After the contract confirmation, the project was also confirmed by the Ministry of Regional Development. This financially ambitious project will be partly financed by the European Union, with the money intended to Croatia from the European Fund for Regional Development.
The Krk Town administration informed the public that the total worth of the project is about 10.5 million Euros. The EU will fund the project with about 7.6 million Euros. Besides EU money, part of the project will be financed by the local government, in the amount of 2.8 million Euros. Fiber optic cables will be integrated (FTTH system), which will bring a fast internet service to every home located on the Krk Island. So far, some of the households in smaller villages had the speed up to 30 Mbit/s. Starting from 2023, these households will get the fibre optics, making the speed over 100 Mbit/s, with the possibility of additional upgrades to over 1 Gbit/s.
Cables will be installed both overground and underground. They will spread across the whole island, to every user in the remote villages. Part of the existing infrastructure will also be used, to maximize the financial investment. The main project activities will start sometime during 2021 with a deadline set to the end of 2023.
