Losinj Island – Losinj Sails Around the World Festival
From the 5th to 19th of September 2020, Losinj island returns to the golden age of seafaring as part of the “Losinj Sails Around the World” festival.
This year’s program will also include regattas, lectures and sporting events, but on a slightly smaller scale.
Traditionally, the opening of the festival will be held on the 5th of September, in the port of Mali Losinj with a parade after which the 8th Losinj rowing regatta will begin. It is a traditional rowing race in which wooden boats compete in two categories: pasara boats up to 4.3 meters and pasara boats over 4.3 meters modelled on the former rowing regattas that took place in the late 19th century in the port of Mali Losinj.
Next week, on the 10th of September, in the morning, there will be a stage show of farewells of sailors on the Annunziata (church) “Greetings to the Captain”, in one of the most beautiful bays in Losinj – Cikat. This event is very interesting for Losinj guests. In the evening, visitors will be able to discover everything about “Participation of Adriatic sailors in the Austro-Hungarian Arctic expedition 1872-1874” organized by the Losinj Seafarers’ Club through a lecture by prof. Miljenko Smokvina in the Museum of Apoxyomenos.
On Friday, the 11th of September 2020, we will enjoy the 3rd night regatta of traditional sailing boats under the spotlights in the bay of Mali Losinj and visitors will be able to observe the sky and celestial bodies thanks to the Astronomical Society “Leo Brenner”.
The sports part of the program starts from the 5th to the 6th of September in Cikat Bay when the 16th international water polo tournament “Good Dolphin” will be held. As a part of the 38th Losinj regatta – the regatta of Lošinj Olympians on the 12th and the 13th of September, after the navigation regatta Mali Losinj – Susak – Zalic – Mali Losinj regatta “rod” sailing in the port of Mali Losinj will be held. In addition to regattas, the 5th International Swimming Marathon “Losinj open water swim challenge” awaits us for these two days.
The lecture “Development of sailing ships with special reference to the typology of sailing ships of the 19th century and the reconstruction of the boat ‘Nerezinac'” will be held by Robert Mohović, PhD, on the 17th of September at the Museum of Apoxyomenos.
The youngest will also be able to enjoy this year’s festival, so from the 5th to the 19th of September they will be able to learn to sail as part of the Educational Sailing for Children organized by the Sailing Club “Jugo”. From the 8th to the 10th and from the 15th to the 17th of September we will follow the sunset together with an educational guide at the “Nerezinac” boat. By the way, during the festival (from Tuesday to Thursday) the boat will depart from the port of Mali Losinj at 6:00 pm and all visitors will be presented with the rich maritime heritage of the island of Losinj with expert guidance.
Children’s creativity will certainly come to the fore from the 14th to the 17th of September as part of a workshop on making souvenirs of traditional boats on the island of Losinj, organized by the Association of Technical Culture of the City of Mali Losinj.
At the end of this year’s festival, we will enjoy the 44th Nerezine regatta of traditional sailing boats in the port of Nerezine where the restored traditional boats (gajeta and pasara) will be presented as part of the “Tree is first” project.
