More than 652,000 vehicles passed through the Pelješac bridge, without a single accident
According to Croatian Roads, from the bridge’s opening until midnight on Monday, September 12, 652,678 cars travelled through it, with an average daily traffic of 13,597 vehicles, and there has not been a single traffic accident on the bridge.
In the last week, an average of 9,389 vehicles travelled over the Pelješki bridge per day.
Traffic is heaviest on weekends
Croatian Roads points out that the Pelješki Bridge and the access roads are intended exclusively for motor vehicle traffic, and that pedestrians, cyclists and motor vehicles that cannot travel at a speed of more than 60 kilometers per hour are not allowed to use it. Namely, in the first days after the bridge was put into traffic, it was noticed that people were running or walking on the bridge, most likely tourists from Komarna or Brijesta. Likewise, in the first days, many motor vehicles were registered in which people travelled just to see the bridge.
Hrvatske ceste also emphasizes that the decisions of the Ministry of the Sea, Transport, and Infrastructure and the administration of Croatian Cesta, which limit the traffic of goods vehicles with a maximum permissible mass of more than 7.5 tons on the Pelješki Bridge and access roads, remain in effect until further notice.
Without a single traffic accident, crowds are sporadic
Croatian roads point out that there has not been a single traffic accident on the Pelješko Bridge since it was put into traffic until yesterday.
Offenses are sanctioned to the maximum extent possible, both in the sense of disobeying traffic signs (e.g. cyclists on the bridge or access roads) and more serious offenses such as, for example, drunken driving and knowingly endangering yourself and others in traffic.
Regarding traffic violations on the Pelješki Bridge, they point out that they are usually isolated cases, especially the most serious violations. Also, there are about 20 cameras (fixed, rotating, thermal) on the bridge itself, and there are over 90 cameras on the entire newly opened section, and if a violation is recorded, at the request of the police, the footage is taken and given to the employees of the Ston Police Station.
Since the opening of the Pelješki Bridge, traffic across the Klek border crossing has dropped drastically, in the first days by more than 50 percent.
Croatian Roads continues to warn drivers not to stop in the right stop lane, as it is only reserved for broken down vehicles.
The Pelješki Bridge was opened on July 26. The bridge that connected Croatia crosses a sea strait with a width of 2140 meters and a length of 2404 meters, with a navigational profile under the bridge of 200 by 55 meters. Economically, it is very important for the entire country, primarily Dubrovnik-Neretva county, and its opening ended the territorial discontinuity created more than 300 years ago when the then Republic of Dubrovnik ceded part of the coast to the Ottoman Empire, reports HRT.
