Rab Town – Rehabilitation of Sorinj landfill in progress
In the past decade, the Fund for Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency has helped the Rab Town and the Municipality of Lopar on Rab island to solve the problem of waste management on the island with almost 12 million Kuna. Thanks to this support, a transhipment station was built on Rab, the construction of which was co-financed by the Fund with 80% of the required money, the recycling yard was completed and the Sorinj landfill is being rehabilitated in order to finally close it. The Fund also participates in this investment with 10% of the required amount.
We can say that we are fulfilling the promise we made in 2017, that we will fully dedicate ourselves to waste management with the goal of reducing the waste story to a level that meets the basic, legally established conditions by the end of the mandate, and that we ultimately separate the desired 55-60% of waste, to which the law obliges us.
Josip Borić, Mayor of Lopar
Two phases completed
Denis Deželjin, Deputy Mayor of Rab, reminds that the property and legal preparations for the remediation of the landfill were completed in 2016. In the next four years, projects were prepared and building permits were obtained for all four phases of remediation of the Sorinj landfill.
Quote – We have completed two of these four phases – a transhipment station and a recycling yard. Rehabilitation works with the closure of the landfill are proceeding according to the agreed and planned dynamics and they are currently being completed by 50%, so we calculate that in 4 to 5 months we will have a regulated area at the landfill. It will be a big shift from the situation we had a few years back.
Composting
Director of the Lopar Vrutak Utility Company, Zdenko Jakuc, said that the utility companies on the island of Rab are an example of “positive flexibility and compliance with decisions, price lists and all state laws and regulations”, and that through presentation and results they have shown that they can keep up with expected goals.
We knew how to nominate all our needs in the best possible way and we justified them all with the results, and the Fund had an understanding for our needs. I believe that for those components of waste that are collected separately, we will find ways to sell them as cheaply as possible and not financially burden our customers, we also hope to find a way to encourage our customers to compost some waste in their gardens, to financially relieve the utilities, and provide ourselves with controlled compost with known components, and thus close the circle.
Jakuc
Close to the goal
The head of the Sector for Environmental Protection, Aleksandra Čilić, points out that the island of Rab has reached the level of 45% of separate waste collection, which is one of the higher percentages compared to other local self-government units.
With some additional investments, I think that in the next maybe a few years, the goals set by the waste management plan of the Republic of Croatia can be achieved here. In addition, the education of the population, especially preschool and school-age children, must be carried out systematically because it is an uninterrupted thread that needs to be nurtured in order for our environment to be clean.
Čilić
Director of the Fund for Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency, Siniša Kukić, praised the cooperation with the Rab Town and the Municipality of Lopar, which are continuously investing in infrastructure development to improve the waste management system.
The fund will also help the action on Goli Otok
The good news for the islanders is that the Public Call will be changed, which was supposed to help utility companies on all islands in co-financing maritime transport of waste, so now instead of one ride, driving in both directions will be recognized. At the meeting with the representatives of the Fund, says the mayor of Lopar, Josip Borić, there was also talk of action on Goli Otok in which the Fund would be involved with 60% co-financing of costs.
Boric also announces they’re expecting some more decisions of the Fund according to which the island of Rab, based on applications for public calls, should receive four new utility vehicles, two in each utility company.
