Road reconstruction begins on Cres and Losinj Island
In the next eighteen months, the main road connecting Cres Island and Losinj Island should be reconstructed. Total length of the road from Osor (Cres) to Nerezine (Losinj) is approximately 2.5 kilometers. It should be finished in the next year and a half, and finally resolve the “black point” as locals call it. Road is only 5.5 meters broad in the path from gas stations in Nerezine to the bridge which connects the two islands. After the reconstruction, the road and the bike path should be about 13 meters wide. Since the reconstruction will partly take place during the summer, contractors are asking for patience from locals, especially in the peak of the season.
Road reconstruction is going to be done parallely with the reconstruction of the sewer system. Total investment value for the sewer system is about 1.5 million euros. Compressive and gravitational sewer system will be installed and connected to the Osor and Nerezine network. A new system will go to Losinj Town. This part of the system will ensure less water loss, and will save about 50 percent of the financials of the entire Cres-Losinj area, as stated by Neven Kruljac, director of the Water Supply for Cres Island. Total value of the project cost is 5 million euros, and is a part of the larger project whose value is 60 million euros. Part of the money will come from the European Funds.
Project contract has been signed in Osor. Besides contractors, it was also signed by the Ministry of Sea, Traffic and Infrastructure of Croatia and Losinj Town mayor. Croatian Electricity is also a part of the project, but was not in attendance. Also, additional Losinj projects were discussed, like expansion of the Losinj Airport, reconstruction of Unije and Mrtvaška ports. This shows that both islands are going in the same direction in terms of infrastructure upgrades.
