Silba Island – Zalic Port reconstructed, island life goes back to normal
It took over eight months for the port to be reconstructed. Construction work is finished on Silba Zalic Port, and ferries will once again arrive at the port. Reconstruction of the only island port started in November 2019. Ferry line was cancelled, and locals did not receive any announcement about it. Today, all the work is done (although a month after the deadline), and Silba port is back on the regular schedule of Jadrolinija routes. Reconstruction project was valued at over 1.3 million Euros, and the port was officially opened on July 15th.
By the time the reconstruction started, there was no official local board which would keep track of the work. Therefore, the information flow between Zadar city administration and Silba port management was nonexistent. Local people were shocked at the beginning, since the news of route cancellation was published only on the official website of Jadrolinija, that same day. However, the unexpected news was soothed by the special ferry line operating every 2 weeks. nInstead of the usual 3-week departure, the line operated twice per month until May, when it started operating once per week.
People of Silba gathered around social media, so they could keep track of the reconstruction, as well as the news about ferry departures. One of the most important partners to the locals was Miatours agency. Their catamarans “Princ Zadra” and “Mali Princ” were used all those months for cargo delivery, while also transporting passengers to the mainland. Locals were immensely grateful to the agency, as shown by the special palette given to Miatours.
