Split announces a hydrogen catamaran for the next season

President of the Croatian Hydrogen Association (CroH2) Frano Barbir presented the project of remodelling the hydrogen-powered catamaran ‘Komiža‘ which transports passengers from Split airport to the city centre.

If this ongoing project comes to life and is implemented fast enough, the catamaran could become the second hydrogen-powered commercial ship in the world. The first such catamaran is being developed in San Francisco as part of the Water-Go-Round project and, according to the latest information, is almost complete.

Hydrogen would be produced by electrolysis of water from its own solar power plant in the hinterland of Split and brought by truck to the port. The project holders are the company Catamaran Line and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture in Split.

Since this is a multi-complex project that requires detailed technical and regulatory elaboration, its realization is planned for the beginning of the next tourist season. The investment in the conversion of the ship is estimated at around one million euros and the construction of hydrogen production and distribution centres with the associated photovoltaic power plants at five million euros.

Promising figures are coming from the state shipping company

But let’s get back to the present and this season which suggests great success compared to the previous one.

From weekend to weekend, as the tourist season approaches, Jadrolinija presents traffic data that are very promising. This is how the extended holiday weekend passed and due to the Anti-Fascist Struggle Day which was marked by an increased number of passengers and vehicles in ferry ports.

As Jadrolinija reports, from June 18 to 22, about 33,000 passengers and 8,870 vehicles were transported on the ferry line Split – Supetar – Split. That same weekend last year, 19,000 passengers and 5,400 vehicles travelled on that ferry line.

On the high-speed line Split – Bol – Jelsa, 1,100 passengers were transported last extended weekend, and last year, from 19 to 22 June, 608 passengers.

On Friday, June 18, two additional lines for Supetar were introduced, and on Saturday, June 19, also two additional lines for Supetar, the state shipping company replied.
