Supetar launched an application for monitoring traffic in the ferry port
Supetar on Brač island has developed a digital platform that will have the functionality of live reporting on the state of traffic in the city, display traffic jams, waiting times, timetable information and provide a predictive calendar of traffic jams on a particular day of the year.
The system, as explained by the City, will help passengers to plan their trip in advance, the city administration to coordinate traffic congestion and safety and sea carriers for the potential introduction of additional emergency lines.
Mitigating the negative consequences of ferry traffic through the city
Supetar Mayor Ivana Marković explains that Supetar, as the smallest island town on Brac island with around 4,300 inhabitants, faces enormous traffic jams every summer. These mostly include traffic jams at the entrance to the Supetar ferry port which is located in the city centre where visitors wait for several hours to board the ferry.
The City of Supetar has therefore decided to mitigate the negative consequences of ferry traffic through the city, taught by the experience of tourists and the daily lives of citizens. As a result, they established a system of monitoring and informing about traffic jams at the approaches to the port.
Eight cameras cover the roads from the port to the city’s exit
A web application has been created and it is available via the link https://ferry.gradsupetar.hr/ on the official website of the City of Supetar. Those interested will have access to real-time streaming with eight cameras that cover the city roads from the ferry port to the city exit, the belt most loaded with cars waiting to board the ferry.
Marković further explains they worked a lot on this application with the idea that digitalization helps in relieving and everyday life during the season. They are aware that they don’t have the opportunity to build an infrastructure that will be useless for ten months, so with digital solutions they wanted to help all of those who come to Supetar and want to leave the island on time and without crowds.
The city has implemented various Smart City solutions
With the e-Traffic application, both citizens and visitors of the City of Supetar can quickly and easily get an insight into the dynamics of ferry line traffic and the current situation on the city’s roads.
The City of Supetar has already implemented various Smart City solutions such as the WebGIS platform for spatial data management, E-services which digitally transformed the work of the city administration. Now, it continues to develop and implement digital solutions to improve city life. The latest Smart City solution works to relieve the city centre from the ferry boarding vehicles by introducing a digital system, a web application for monitoring and reporting traffic conditions.
Red and green lines
The City points out that the streaming will be additionally accompanied by updated timetable data (departure and arrival times) and information on the occupancy of each term separately. Thus, in case of congestion, the line that will be filled with cars already waiting in line will be marked in red with a note ‘Crowded’, while the others will be marked in green and ‘Not crowded’. The application will be updated regularly on a daily basis in cooperation with the state shipping company and the liner shipping company.
