Vela Luka on Korcula to get a new ferry terminal
“It is a good day for Vela Luka and our county. This is another project which will help with connecting our island even better than now”, said the Dubrovnik County prefect.
He emphasized that there are 7 other projects, which will be funded by the European Union, and are focused on developing island ports and terminals. These include ferry terminals in Ubli, Vela Luka, Polaciste, Putin, Trpanj, Donje Celo, Cavtat, as well as Prigradica and Perna. With these new terminals, Korcula should have better connectivity with the mainland, which will result in better living conditions for island residents.
The prefect also announced the start of the new project which will see a new fisherman port in Vela Luka on Korcula. The funds for that project are already secured.
“Ferries and ferry terminals are extremely important for locals and are the building blocks that should keep people living on the island. Investing in the maritime infrastructure is essential, and this project will expand the tourism and economic possibilities of Vela Luka. About 800 million Kunas worth of investments is currently being put in our County, which will improve the lives of our island residents”, said Branko Bacic
The project is valued at over 14 million euros
The total investment is worth over 14 million euros, of which 10.5 is funded by the Cohesion Fund of the European Union. The work will include building a 500-meter shore with three ferry docks. Two docks will be able to accommodate 70-meter ferries, while the other will be built for 150-meter ferries and boats. Moreover, 18 thousand square meters of shore will be built and uses for boarding of the vehicles. An additional parking lot will also be built.
The company operating the works is called Pomgrad Inzenjering, while the deadline is set for 18 months, by the end of 2022.
